Mastodons Unable Overcome No. 10 Ball State in MIVA Action
3/16/2016 9:45:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Alex Harthaller comes within two digs of his second collegiate double-double, but the IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to get over the hump, falling in four sets to in-state rival, No. 10 Ball State (25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 19-25). Harthaller led the Mastodons with 18 kills, eight digs, and four total blocks while Andrew Sellan (16) and Tony Price (12) each reached double-digit kills. Luis Bertran finished with 11 digs to extend his IPFW school record of 889 career digs.
The 'Dons opened the match taking the first point, eventually jumping out to a 7-3 lead early on. Ball State would continue to fight back, getting within two points at 11-9, but a 9-3 run would held IPFW gain a 20-12 lead. The Cardinals would not go easy as they fought back to get within three points, but the 'Dons were too much as IPFW took the opening set 25-21. Harthaller led the Blue and White with five kills, three dig, two blocks and an ace in the set.
IPFW would open the second set in a rut as Ball State took an early 4-0 lead. The Mastodons continued to battle, eventually coming within a point of the Cards, 15-14. However, BSU was able to finish off the set 25-19 to tie the match. Harthaller earned six kills with a pair of digs in the set, while Bertran earned five digs.
The Mastodons would trail early in the third set, 5-3, before taking the next four points to gain the lead. A 5-1 run from the 'Dons helped IPFW gain a 14-11 advantage. The Blue and White would eventually stretch its lead to 20-17 late in the set before Ball State fought back, eventually taking the set 25-23.
The 'Dons would take an early 7-5 lead over the Cardinals to start the fourth set, but BSU would go on a 5-1 run to gain the lead. Ball State would continue to pull away from the Mastodons, eventually taking a 17-13 lead. A second 5-1 run from BSU would extend the Cards' lead to 23-16 as Ball State eventually took the final set 25-19.
The Blue and White return to action when they host Grand Canyon for a pair of matches Friday and Saturday on Arnie Ball Court, both set for 7 p.m.
