3/18/2016 10:20:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Andrew Sellan came within three kills of tying his career best as the IPFW men's volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit and topped Grand Canyon in five sets (22-25, 17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 17-15). The win was the first Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) win for the Mastodons this season, as they improved their record to 8-13, 1-8 MIVA.
Sellan combined for 18 kills in the final two sets and hit .413 overall during the match (26-7-46), adding four digs and four total blocks. Kyle Fitzgerald finished the match with six kills on 13 attempts with no hitting errors (.462). Luis Bertran continued to extend his IPFW career digs record with 14 against the Antelopes. Bertran's career number now sits at 903. Freshman Jaysen Zaleski finished the night hitting .600, coming off three kills in five attempts, adding four total blocks.
Trailing 2-0 entering the third set, the Mastodons needed a spark to continue the match. IPFW jumped out to a 7-5 start in the third set and continued to lead midway through at 14-12. Grand Canyon would take a 9-3 run to go up 21-17 over the 'Dons, but the Blue and White continued to fight to force extra points. IPFW withstood two match point opportunities for the 'Lopes, eventually taking the third set 27-25. Sellan earned four kills in the set while Fitzgerald had three kills and two total blocks.
With momentum heading into the fourth set, the 'Dons and 'Lopes battled early on before the Blue and White started to pull away, taking three-straight points and an 8-6 lead. Grand Canyon would continue to fight as they knotted the set at 16 midway through. A 6-3 run would help regain the lead for IPFW at 22-19 as the Mastodons eventually took the fourth set 25-23, forcing a decisive fifth set. Sellan dominated the fourth set with 10 kills, hitting .571 (10-2-14).
Both IPFW and Grand Canyon went toe-to-toe in the final set as the 'Dons lead 8-7 before switching sides on the court. The 'Lopes would briefly take a 14-13 lead before the Mastodons finished on a 4-1 run, winning its first extended fifth-set traveling to Grand Canyon last season on April 18, 2015. Sellan earned eight kills in the final set, adding an ace, dig, and three total blocks.
The Mastodons opened the match going up 5-3, but a 5-1 run from the Antelopes shortly afterwards would give Grand Canyon an 11-10 lead midway through the set. Each team would trade points throughout the set as the 'Dons would eventually earn three-straight points to regain the lead 19-18. However, the 'Lopes proved to be too much in the opening set, eventually winning 25-22. Tony Price earned four kills in the set while Sellan had three. Gabriel Quinones finished the opening set with four digs.
The second set did not start well for the 'Dons as IPFW trailed 6-1 early on. The Blue and White tried to climb back in it, cutting the deficit to 14-11, but GCU continued to pull away, eventually taking the set 25-17.
The Blue and White return to action when they wrap-up the weekend series with Grand Canyon. The match is set for Saturday at 7 p.m., on Arnie Ball Court.
