IPFW Unable to Overcome Errors in Loss to Grand Canyon
3/19/2016 9:31:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite a near double-double from Andrew Sellan, the IPFW men's volleyball was unable to overcome 29 total errors, falling to Grand Canyon in straight sets (21-25, 21-25, 22-25). The loss drops the Mastodons' record to 8-14, 1-9 MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), while Grand Canyon improves to 12-10, 5-7 MIVA.
Sellan finished the night with 17 kills and nine digs, while Tony Price earned 11 kills and four digs. Luis Bertran's seven digs extended his IPFW record of 910 career digs.
IPFW started slow as the Antelopes took a 6-1 lead early on in the first set. Later on, a 5-1 run from the 'Dons helped cut the deficit to 10-8, but GCU continued to pull away, eventually going up 15-9. The Blue and White would continue to fight back with a 6-2 run to pull within two of the 'Lopes at 17-15. However, Grand Canyon would take the opening set 25-21. Sellan lead the 'Dons in the first set with five kills and two digs as Michael Keegan and David Frazee each earned two blocks.
Once again the Mastodons would find themselves in a hole, down 8-4 early in the second set, but would climb back in it with four-straight points to tie the set at eight each. Grand Canyon would start to pull away, taking a 16-11 lead, but the 'Dons continued to fight, eventually getting within a point at 20-19, highlighted with a 5-1 run. IPFW and GCU traded the next four points before the 'Lopes took the set 25-21. Sellan finished the set with four kills and four digs, while Price earned three kills for the 'Dons.
The 'Dons took an early lead in the third set, going up 5-4, but the 'Lopes would earn the next three points. Trailing 10-9, IPFW went on a 7-2 run to take a 16-12 lead midway through the set. However, a 7-1 run from GCU late in the match would swing momentum in favor of the Antelopes, helping Grand Canyon take the final set 25-22. Sellan earned eight kills and three digs in the set while Price earned six kills and two digs.
The Blue and White return to action when they host the McKendree Bearcats to start the final home weekend of the season. The match is set for Friday, March 25, at 7 p.m., on Arnie Ball Court.
