Balanced Attack Leads IPFW to Sweep of McKendree

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Alex Harthaller, Tony Price, and Andrew Sellan hit double-digit kills to help lead the IPFW men's volleyball team to a sweep of MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) foe McKendree (25-23, 26-24, 25-18). The win improves the Mastodon record to 9-14, 2-9 MIVA, as the Bearcats fall to 9-9, 4-7 MIVA.
Sellan earned a team high 11 kills as both Price and Harthaller finished with 10 each. Harthaller hit .304 on the night (10-3-23), while adding seven digs and two blocks. Michael Keegan finished the night hitting .800 (4-0-5), with 31 assists, and tying his career high of five blocks. David Frazee earned a team high six total blocks as Kyle Fitzgerald finished with five. With 10 digs, Luis Bertran extended his IPFW career digs record to 920.
IPFW started the match in a slight hole, trailing McKendree 4-2, before taking the next two points to tie the set. The 'Dons would fall behind midway through, 12-7, after letting up five-straight points, but a 7-3 run would help cut the deficit. After trailing 19-17, the Blue and White would seal the opening set, 25-23, after going on an 8-4 run. Harthaller led the 'Dons, hitting .375 (4-1-8), while Keegan earned 11 assists and three digs in the opening set.
The 'Dons would once again fell behind early in the second set, trailing the Bearcats 4-3, before going on a brief 3-1 run. A 4-0 run later on from the Mastodons would give IPFW an 11-8 lead. The 'Dons would hold the lead until McKendree took five-consecutive points, going up 22-19 late. Each team would trade points at the end of the set before IPFW came away with the 26-24 win. Sellan led the Mastodons with five kills in the set, while Keegan earned 11 assists and three total blocks.
IPFW would use four-straight points early in the third set to pull ahead 5-2, before starting to pull away later on with three-consecutive points to make it 13-8 midway through the set. The Bearcats tried to claw back, eventually cutting into the IPFW lead, 15-13, but the 'Dons refused to let up, taking the next four points. The final point of the run came off a McKendree red card after a player challenged the up official, shortly after receiving a yellow card just points earlier. With the end of the set nearing, the Blue and White closed out the match on a 5-2 run to finish the sweep. Both Price and Harthaller earned four kills in the set, while David Frazee was a force at the net with three total kills.
The 'Dons wrap up their home schedule when they host No. 1 Ohio State for Senior Day on Saturday, March 26. The match will be played on Arnie Ball Court, beginning at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, Bertran, Frazee, Sellan, Tyler Golsteyn, and Nick Smalter will be honored as a part of Senior Day.
