FORT WAYNE, Ind. – An offensive outburst from the IPFW men's volleyball team was not enough as the Mastodons fell to top-ranked Ohio State in three close sets (23-25, 25-27, 22-25). The loss drops the Mastodons' record to 9-15, 2-10 MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association), as the Buckeyes improved to 20-3, 11-1 MIVA. The match was also the last home match for Andrew Sellan, Luis Bertran, David Frazee, Tyler Golsteyn, and Nick Smalter, as each were honored prior to the match for Senior Night.
Alex Harthaller hit .478 (11-0-23) and Sellan earned 11 kills as the 'Dons combined for a team .394 hitting percentage (34-6-71). However, Ohio State's top three performers, Nicolas Szerszen, Miles Johnson, and Blake Leeson, each hit over .400 with Szerszen (19) and Johnson (13) earning double-digit kills and Leeson (8-0-9) hitting .889 on the night.
IPFW came out with three-straight points over the Buckeyes, before Ohio State came back to take a 4-3 lead. The 'Dons continued to press as they battled to a 12-11 lead. However, OSU would earn a slim two-point lead before the teams went point-for-point with Ohio State going up 24-22 late in the set. The Mastodons were able to hold off the first set point before dropping the opening set 25-23. Both Sellan and Harthaller earned four kills on seven attempts as the 'Dons combined to hit .545 in the set.
Each team would trade the first points of the set before Ohio State went up 5-3 early on and stretched their lead to 10-6 midway through the set. The Mastodons fought back shortly afterwards with a 7-3 run to knot the set at 16. The Buckeyes would start to pull away with a 4-1 run before the 'Dons called a timeout. The Blue and White would take the next four points following the break, eventually going up 24-22. OSU fought off three set points before taking the second frame 27-25 over the 'Dons. Sellan earned four kills in the set as Harthaller and Kyle Fitzgerald each earned two total blocks.
Ohio State jumped to an early lead in the third set, 4-1, before the 'Dons came back to get within a point at 12-11. Trailing 22-17 late in the set, IPFW took a 3-1 run to cut the deficit. The Blue and White was able to hold off two match points, but the Buckeyes came out on top in the set, 25-22, to wrap up the night. Harthaller hit .500 in the final set (5-0-10) as Frazee earned two total blocks.
The Mastodons look to gain an edge in the MIVA Tournament race as they travel to Lindenwood and Quincy on Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2. Each match will begin at 8 p.m., Eastern Time.
