Mastodons Not Fooled in Sweep at Lindenwood
4/1/2016 10:37:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The IPFW men's volleyball team earned a crucial road MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) win at Lindenwood (25-13, 25-21, 25-21) to keep pace for a spot in the MIVA Tournament. Andrew Sellan, Alex Harthaller, Tony Price, and Kyle Fitzgerald each hit over .300 with at least five kills as the Blue and White improved to 10-15 overall, 3-10 MIVA.
Sellan finished with 10 kills and five digs while Harthaller earned nine kills and four blocks. Tony Price (six kills) and Fitzgerald (five kills) only had one attack error each. Luis Bertran and Michael Keegan each earned six digs in the match while David Frazee had a match-high seven total blocks.
The Mastodons quickly showed Lindenwood that they were not joking around as IPFW took a 12-7 lead early in the opening set, highlighted by six-straight points. Lindenwood tried to climb back in the set, cutting the IPFW lead to 17-11. With the Mastodons bench enjoying celebration antics, the Blue and White would take the next six points to break the set open, eventually winning 25-13. The 'Dons hit a remarkable .455 (13-3-22), while holding Lindenwood to -.074 (6-8-27) in the first set.
IPFW fell behind early in the second set, 2-6, but would take the next seven points to help prove the first set wasn't a hoax. The Lions would once again pull close in the set, eventually getting within two points at 21-19, but the 'Dons would finish the set, 25-21. IPFW hit .318 (10-3-22) in the second set as the Lions managed .154 (10-6-26).
The Blue and White leaped out to a 12-6 lead in the third set before Lindenwood stopped the Mastodons' escapades with a 7-1 run midway through the set, to take a 19-18 lead over IPFW. As the quips were silenced on the Mastodon bench, the Blue and White would slowly regain momentum with three-consecutive points before LU took two back, knotting the third set at 21. With the fun and laughter from the IPFW bench turning to a tense focus, those on the court took the final four points to earn a 25-21 win in the set, returning the enjoyment to the exuberant VolleyDons on April Fools night.
IPFW looks to take another step towards a MIVA Tournament berth in another big conference match on April 2 at Quincy. First serve is set for 8 p.m., in Quincy, Illinois.
