Mastodons Host a Pair against Grand Canyon

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team (7-13, 0-8 MIVA) looks to rebound after a tough home loss to No. 10 Ball State as the Mastodons host (RV) Grand Canyon (11-9, 4-6 MIVA) in a pair of matches, both Friday and Saturday, on Arnie Ball Court. First serve for each match is set for 7 p.m.

A Natural Wonder...

IPFW is 9-5 all-time against Grand Canyon, including a split of last season's series. The 'Dons took the previous match, 3-2, in Phoenix on April 18, 2015. The Mastodons are 6-2 at home against the Antelopes, splitting the previous four home matches. All-time, IPFW is a combined 18-9 in set-wins at home. The 'Dons hold the upper-hand, 3-1, in the last four meetings with the 'Lopes.

Diggin' Up History...

With his performance against No. 8 Loyola on February 20, senior libero Luis Bertran broke the IPFW career mark for most digs, previously held by All-American Jay Golsteyn (1986-89). Golsteyn held the record for 27 years when he accumulated 816 digs during his collegiate career.

As of March 15, Luis Bertran is the active career leader in both digs (878) and digs per set (2.46) amongst Division I participants, while sitting fourth overall amongst all all divisions.
Andrew Sellan ranks third for Division I active career leaders in kills (1,199) and kills per set (3.51), while sitting second in Division I attempts per set (7.86) and fourth in total attempts (2,618). Amongst all divisions, Sellan is fifth in kills per set and sixth in total kills, while being sixth in attempts per set and eighth in total attempts. Only Mike Michelau of Erskine is above Sellan in Division I active career leaders in kills (1,447) and attempts per set (8.97).

The IPFW men's volleyball program played its 1,000th match when the Mastodons traveled to McKendree on Feb. 6. IPFW will became the third MIVA program and fifth outside of California to reach the 1,000 match plateau. Additionally, the 'Dons became the 12th overall program to play in 1,000 matches.

As of March 15, The Mastodons are currently ranked fifth nationally in digs per set and in the top-20 for blocks per set (12th), kills per set (16th), aces per set (17th), and assists per set (19th). Andrew Sellan ranks sixth nationally in kills per set (4.48) and seventh in points per set (5.10). Luis Bertran (2.68 digs per set) sits fifth nationally. Michael Keegan is 20th in assists per set (9.68) while David Frazee is 21st in blocks per set (1.00) and 26th in hitting percentage (.345).

Solid as a Rock...

Head coach Ryan "Rock" Perrotte is in his 17th year with IPFW, and first as the head coach. During his time as a Mastodon, Perrotte has been a part of 445 matches, going 263-182 (.591). As a student-athlete, Perrotte helped the 'Dons to a 22-5 record in 1999, winning the MIVA Tournament and reaching the NCAA Final Four against Long Beach State (L, 3-2). As the assistant coach, Perrotte helped the Blue and White win back-to-back MIVA Tournaments and reaching the NCAA Final Four in 2006 and 2007. During those seasons, the 'Dons went a combined 46-15, reaching the NCAA Championship against UC Irvine in 2007.

On the Attack...

With his performance at No. 10 Penn State (Jan. 23), Andrew Sellan became the 18th men's volleyball student-athlete in IPFW history to reach 1,000 career kills. Additionally, Sellan became just the seventh Mastodon to reach the 1,000 kill milestone in the rally scoring era (2001-present). Hector Soto (1997-2000) leads IPFW career kills with 2,193.
