NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The IPFW softball team put up a tough fight against No. 22 Notre Dame, but the Mastodons fell to the Fighting Irish 5-0 in a weather-shortened game.
Demitra Burns and Caitlyn DeLong claimed IPFW's two hits on the afternoon. Starting pitcher Elizabeth Snodgrass took the loss, but heled the nationally ranked Fighting Irish to five runs on six hits over four innings of work. Sarah Lazarowich came on for the final two innings and allowed only one hit while striking out a pair of Irish batters.
Notre Dame scored a run in the first after a pair of singles to lead off the game. The Fighting Irish added three runs in the third inning, all with two outs, including a two-run home run. They tacked on another run in the fourth with two outs.
With one out in the second for the 'Dons, Burns singled through the right side to put a runner on. The Irish had the luck on their side as IPFW hit into a double play to end the inning. The Mastodons had another opportunity in the fourth when Lauren Watson drew a leadoff walk. After a sacrifice moved her to second, she was left stranded there as the final two outs were recorded.
DeLong singled to lead off the top of the sixth for the 'Dons, but they were unable to moved her as the next three batters were retired. Taylor Gordy Prescott led off the top of the seventh and was hit by a pitch, but lightning struck and ended the game before the Mastodons were able to start a rally.
IPFW returns home to host Omaha for a weekend series beginning April 2 at 10:30 a.m. The Saturday doubleheader will be the team's annual Pink Out game to honor breast cancer survivors.
