IPFW Wins Non-League Home Game Past Visiting Cleary 5-1
3/30/2016 7:06:00 PM | Baseball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Redshirt-senior Shane Trevino had three hits, including two home runs, with three runs and two RBIs, and redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker added two RBIs, as well, to lead IPFW to a 5-1 non-league baseball win past Cleary University Wednesday afternoon at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne. Senior Kyle Orwig earned the pitching win for the host Mastodons (12-13) against the visiting Cougars (8-16) in a game called in the eighth inning due to rain. IPFW will host South Dakota State University in its first Summit League home series this weekend, April 1-3, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne.
IPFW scored two runs in the first inning when senior Evan VanSumeren (1-2) doubled to left center field with one out, stole third base and crossed the plate on a bad throw to third by the catcher on the steal. Trevino (3-4, 2 RBIs) followed with a two-out solo home run to right field for the early two-run advantage that would prove enough.
The Mastodons added single runs in each of the third, fifth and seventh innings. In the third, Trevino singled to lead-off, moved to third on a single by redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (1-4) and scored when Baker (1-3, 2 RBIs) reached on a fielding error at shortstop. In the fifth, senior Kendall Whitman (1-3) tripled down the right field line to lead-off and crossed the plate on a one-out RBI single by Baker. In the seventh, Trevino hit his second solo homer of the day to right field, also his team-leading seventh home run this season, to close the scoring.
Rain began in the top of the eighth inning with one out, and following a 30-minute delay and no end in sight for the wet weather, the umpires called the game.
Orwig (1-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.1 scoreless innings for the mound victory, scattering five hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Damian Helm tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Mastodons, yielding one hit with one strikeout and no walks. Junior Tanner McAninch pitched one-third of an inning, allowing no hits, but the one run, earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Classmate Jordan Martin went the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and two walks.
Cleary was led offensively by Dugan Roosa (2-3) with two hits, while Briton Ott (0-3, RBI) had the RBI. Jack Robb (2-2) started for the Cougars and took the pitching decision with 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs, three earned, with five strikeouts and three walks.
