IPFW Drops Series Opener To South Dakota State 18-5
4/2/2016 9:30:00 PM | Baseball
The game was played in Kokomo due to unplayable field conditions at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne, following the week's heavy rain. Kokomo Municipal Stadium is a beautiful new facility that is home to the city's team in a collegiate summer league and features a completely artificial surface, which proved essential as the day included some rain, hail and snow, as well as strong winds gusting to 50-plus miles per hour throughout the day.
South Dakota State scored six runs in the first inning, three runs in the third, six more runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and one final run in the seventh inning. IPFW plated three runs in the first, along with single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
In the first for IPFW, senior Evan VanSumeren (2-4) singled with one out and moved to third on a double down the left field line by Kaiser (2-4, RBI). Trevino (2-4, 3 RBIs) promptly followed with his team-leading eighth home run this season, a three-run blast to right field, that made it a 6-3 game after the 44-minute first inning.
The Mastodons added their run in the fifth courtesy of a solo home run to left center field by Kaiser, while the run in the fifth was via a solo home run to right field by Valenzuela-Reece (1-2, RBI). It was Kaiser's third homer this season, and the first of the year for Valenzuela-Reece. Senior Kendall Whitman (2-4) also had two hits during the contest for IPFW.
Sophomore Evan Miller (3-2) started on the mound for the Mastodons and pitched the first 3.0 innings in defeat, allowing seven hits and nine runs, all earned, with one strikeout and six walks. Junior Mitchell Ley tossed 1.0 inning of relief, yielding five hits and six runs, two earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman Adam Neal pitched the final 3.0 innings, scattering five hits and three runs, two earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.
South Dakota State was led offensively by Luke Ringhofer (3-4, 4 RBIs) with three hits and four RBIs, Nick Smith (3-5, 3 RBIs) with three hits and three RBIs, Jesse Munsterman (3-5, 3 RBIs) with three hits and three RBIs, and Newt Johnson (2-4, 3 RBIs) with two hits and three RBIs. Andrew Clemen (2-4) started for the Jackrabbits and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the mound win, scattering seven hits and four runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and two walks.
