In the opener, IPFW trailed 7-0 before scoring a run in the seventh inning when sophomore Zak Kellogg (2-3) doubled to left center field, moved to third on a well-placed bunt single by junior Jackson Boyce (1-2) and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by senior Evan VanSumeren (1-4, 2 RBIs). The Mastodons added two runs in the ninth as senior Grant Wilson (0-0) drew a two-out, pinch-hit walk to keep the inning alive. Soat (1-4, RBI) followed with a run-scoring triple to the wall in right center field, and scored on an RBI single by VanSumeren.
Senior Trevor Storie (2-5) started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.2 innings in defeat, allowing seven hits and seven runs, six earned, with one strikeout and four walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 3.1 innings of relief, allowing two hits and two runs, one earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Classmate Tanner McAninch pitched the final 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding one hit with one strikeout and one walk.
SDSU was led offensively in game one by Paul Jacobson (2-5, 2 RBIs) with two hits and two RBIs, while Landon Busch (4-2) pitched 4.2 innings of relief for the mound win, allowing six hits and three runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and one walk.
In the nightcap, IPFW took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the first inning after Soat (2-5, RBI) reached on an infield single and later scored on an RBI ground ball by Kaiser (2-5, 2 RBIs). VanSumeren (1-5), who had doubled down the left field line, crossed the plate, as well, via a wild pitch. The Mastodons added a run in the fourth when Logan (2-4, RBI) hit a solo home run to right field, his third homer this spring.
IPFW scored two runs in the fifth inning via RBI singles from Soat and redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (1-4, RBI) that scored redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (0-1) and Boyce (1-3), who had walked and singled, respectively. The Mastodons added their final run in the seventh courtesy of a solo home run to left field by Kaiser. The huge blast was his fourth homer this season.
Redshirt-junior Jake Weber (2-2) made his first start of the season for IPFW and pitched the first 4.0 innings in defeat, allowing six hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and five walks. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps faced two batters, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt-junior Brandon Pease tossed 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Damian Helm pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walks.
