IPFW Takes 5-4 Road Win At Chicago State
4/5/2016 8:25:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW scored two runs in the first inning, getting RBI from Whitman (2-4, RBI) and senior Sean Herberger (1-5, RBI). Whitman was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded, forcing senior Evan VanSumeren (1-4), who had walked with one out, across home plate. Herberger added an RBI ground ball that plated redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser (1-5), who had reached on a fielding error.
The Mastodons added two more runs in the third inning, getting RBI from sophomore Zak Kellogg (0-3, RBI) and Boyce (2-3, RBI). Kellogg had a run-scoring ground ball that drove in Herberger, who had reached on an infield single, while Boyce had an RBI double to left field to score freshman Brandon Yoho (1-4), who had singled, as well.
IPFW added what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fifth inning when Whitman singled to open the frame and later crossed the plate courtesy of a passed ball with two outs.
Senior Kyle Orwig started for IPFW and pitched the first 2.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Helm tossed the next 3.0 scoreless innings for the Mastodons to gain the win, scattering three hits with one strikeout and no walks. Junior Tanner McAninch pitched two-thirds of an inning, yielding one hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Classmate Mitchell Ley pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Jordan Martin (2) tossed the final 1.0 inning for the save, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks.
Chicago State was led offensively by Zach Thomas (3-4, RBI) with three hits and an RBI, while Josh Willis (1-2) started on the mound for the Cougars and pitched the first 6.0 innings in defeat, yielding seven hits and five runs, three earned, with three strikeouts and four walks.
