Five-Run Fourth Inning Not Enough to Power Softball's Comeback
4/10/2016 5:55:00 PM | Softball
On the day, Lauren Watson led the 'Dons going 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Amber Davis finished 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs. Sierra Miranda and Jessica Murray also drove in a pair, while Miranda and Jenna Balthazor each scored twice. In all, seven of IPFW's starters collected a hit.
The 11 hits for the Mastodons were the most off NDSU by a Mid-Major program this season, and the third most by any team behind No. 21 Baylor (13) and North Carolina (12). In addition, the eight runs scored on the Bison are the third most this season behind No. 2 Alabama (15) and North Carolina (9).
North Dakota State jumped out to the early lead, scoring four runs in the first and two more in the second. IPFW got on the board in the third after a leadoff walk to Balthazor and a single by Watson. After a sacrifice and a walk loaded the bases, Murray drove home a run on a sacrifice fly. Another walk loaded the bases and a single from Davis brought home Watson.
The Bison responded with four more runs in the bottom of the third. The 'Dons exploded with five runs and six hits in the fourth to close the gap. The Mastodons began the inning with five consecutive hits by Taylor Lyman, Balthazor, Watson, Emily Olszewski, and Miranda. The new NDSU pitcher was unable to contain IPFW as Miranda promptly delivered a two-run single and two outs later, Davis brought home a run on a single to right.
After holding North Dakota State off the scoreboard in the fourth, the Bison struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Mastodons got a run back in the sixth with two outs, following a walk to Miranda and an RBI double from Murray.
IPFW had a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh by Davis, but were unable to put any more runners on base and complete the rally.
Elizabeth Snodgrass began the game in the circle for the Mastodons and took the loss in three innings of work. Sarah Lazarowich came on for the final three innings and held the Bison to one earned run on four hits.
IPFW returns to the field for a Summit League series at in-state rival IUPUI April 16-17.
