MACOMB, Ill. -- Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser hit three two-run home runs for six RBIs to lead IPFW to a 9-1 series-opening Summit League baseball road win at Western Illinois University Friday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium in Macomb, Illinois. Senior Brandon Soat added two hits, including a solo home run, and classmate Evan VanSumeren had two hits and two RBIs for the visiting Mastodons (15-19, 2-11 Summit League). Sophomore right-handed pitcher Evan Miller earned the win against the host Fighting Leathernecks (10-21, 7-6 Summit League) with 7.0 strong innings on the mound. IPFW and WIU will play the middle game of the weekend series on Saturday, April 16, at 2 p.m. ET in Illinois.
IPFW scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, as Soat (2-5, RBI) singled to open the contest and scored when VanSumeren (2-4, 2 RBIs) followed with a run-scoring double to center field. Kaiser (3-5, 6 RBIs) promptly hit the first two-run home run down the left field line and it was 3-0 after three at bats. The Mastodons added three more runs in the second inning when Soat hit a solo home run to left center field, followed by VanSumeren getting hit-by-a-pitch, before Kaiser blasted his second two-run homer of the day … this time to left field for a 6-0 advantage.
WIU managed a run in the seventh inning, but IPFW scored three runs yet again, this time in the eighth inning, for the eight-run victory. In the eighth, VanSumeren added a run-scoring single that plated junior Jackson Boyce (0-4), who had reached on a fielder's choice, while Kaiser followed with his third two-run shot of the game … to left field again.
Senior Sean Herberger (3-4) added three hits for IPFW, and classmate Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (2-4) collected two hits for the Mastodons, who had 12 hits in the contest.
Miller (4-3) started for IPFW and pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with five strikeouts and three walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed a scoreless inning for the Mastodons, retiring each of the three batters he faced with one strikeout. Freshman Adam Neal pitched the final shutout inning, yielding two hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
WIU was led offensively by Roman Visintine (2-4) and Nathan Pollock (2-4) with two hits each, while Adam McGinnis (1-4, RBI) added an RBI. Aaron Michel (1-5) started for the Fighting Leathernecks and pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs, all earned, with eight strikeouts and no walks.
