IPFW Wins Game Two Of Series At Western Illinois 11-5
4/16/2016 6:07:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW fell behind early as WIU scored three runs in the first inning, but the Mastodons began battling back with a run in the second inning and two more in the third inning to tie the contest at 3-3. In the second, redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (2-5, RBI) drew a two-out walk and later scored from third base when senior Brandon Soat (0-4, RBI) was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded. In the third, Kaiser (3-5, 3 RBIs) doubled to left field to open the frame, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (0-4) and crossed the plate courtesy of a run-scoring single by senior Kendall Whitman (1-4, RBI). Whitman would later score on an RBI single by Boyce (2-3, 2 RBIs).
WIU answered with another run in the fifth inning to lead 4-3, but IPFW responded with six runs in the sixth inning to take control of the middle game of the series. In the sixth, senior Evan VanSumeren (1-4) drew a one-out walk before Kaiser slammed his fourth two-run home run in two days to left field to put the Mastodons ahead for good, 5-4. Trevino and Whitman each reached when hit-by-pitches, and Logan (2-5, 2 RBIs) promptly followed with a two-run double to left center field to drive both runners across the plate. Baker added a run-scoring double down the left field line to score Logan, and after advancing to third on a wild pitch, Baker also crossed the plate courtesy of another wild pitch with two outs and it was a 9-4 advantage.
IPFW added two more runs in the seventh inning to lead 11-4, getting a solo home run to left field from Kaiser … his fifth homer in two days, surpassing the four homers he had hit in the previous 33 games, and increasing his season total to nine to take over the team lead among the Mastodons. Whitman also scored during the at bat, drawing a one-out walk and later scoring from third on a bases-loaded walk to Boyce.
Storie (3-5) started for IPFW and pitched the first 6.0 innings, scattering six hits and four runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Damian Helm (1) tossed the final 3.0 innings for the Mastodons to earn his first save of the season, yielding three hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks.
WIU was led offensively by Nick Schrader (1-2, 2 RBIs) and Deion Thompson (1-3, 2 RBIs), each with one hit and two RBIs. Nick Milligan (2-1) pitched 1.1 inning of relief in defeat for the Fighting Leathernecks, allowing three hits and six runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.
