IPFW Defeats Crosstown Saint Francis 3-2

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Senior Kendall Whitman collected two hits, while redshirt-senior Shane Trevino along with seniors Brandon Soat and Evan VanSumeren each had RBI, to lead IPFW to a 3-2 non-league baseball home win past the University of Saint Francis Wednesday afternoon at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne. Senior Kyle Orwig gained the pitching win for the Mastodons (18-19), who won their fifth-straight game against the crosstown Cougars (12-30), while redshirt-junior Jake Weber earned the mound save. IPFW will host Oral Roberts University in a Summit League series this weekend, April 22-24, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne.
IPFW scored lone runs in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings … never trailing in the contest, as USF scored lone runs in both the sixth and eighth innings. Whitman (2-3) had two of the six hits in the game by the Mastodons.
In the fourth, senior Greg Kaiser (1-3) was hit-by-a-pitch with one out, stole second base and advanced to third via a passed ball, before scoring on an RBI single by Trevino (1-4, RBI). In the fifth, sophomore Zak Kellogg (0-1) drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on wild pitch and later scored when Soat (1-4, RBI) perfectly placed a bunt to the right side that turned into an infield single and RBI. In the seventh, junior Jackson Boyce (0-2) reached on a fielder's choice while trying to sacrifice bunt, stole second and crossed the plate courtesy of a run-scoring double to right center field by VanSumeren (1-4, RBI).
Orwig (2-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 5.0 scoreless innings for the victory, scattering four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Adam Neal tossed 1.0 inning of relief, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Sophomore Damian Helm pitched 1.0 shutout inning, retiring all three batters he faced with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 1.0 inning, as well, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Weber (6) pitched the final 1.0 shutout inning for his team-leading sixth save this season, retiring all three batters he faced with no strikeouts and no walks.
Saint Francis was led offensively by Keaton Sullivan (1-4, RBI) with a solo home run to left field in the sixth. Jake Garrett (1-6) started for the Cougars and pitched the first 7.0 innings in defeat, scattering five hits and three runs, all earned, with three strikeout and three walks.
