IPFW scored lone runs in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings … never trailing in the contest, as USF scored lone runs in both the sixth and eighth innings. Whitman (2-3) had two of the six hits in the game by the Mastodons.
In the fourth, senior Greg Kaiser (1-3) was hit-by-a-pitch with one out, stole second base and advanced to third via a passed ball, before scoring on an RBI single by Trevino (1-4, RBI). In the fifth, sophomore Zak Kellogg (0-1) drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on wild pitch and later scored when Soat (1-4, RBI) perfectly placed a bunt to the right side that turned into an infield single and RBI. In the seventh, junior Jackson Boyce (0-2) reached on a fielder's choice while trying to sacrifice bunt, stole second and crossed the plate courtesy of a run-scoring double to right center field by VanSumeren (1-4, RBI).
Orwig (2-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 5.0 scoreless innings for the victory, scattering four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Adam Neal tossed 1.0 inning of relief, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Sophomore Damian Helm pitched 1.0 shutout inning, retiring all three batters he faced with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 1.0 inning, as well, allowing two hits and one run, earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Weber (6) pitched the final 1.0 shutout inning for his team-leading sixth save this season, retiring all three batters he faced with no strikeouts and no walks.
