IPFW Wins At Big Ten Conference Member Purdue 4-3
5/10/2016 10:28:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the first inning, as Kaiser (2-4, 3 RBIs) slammed a three-run home run to left field for his team-best 12th homer this season. The blast also scored seniors Brandon Soat (1-3) and Kendall Whitman (0-3), who had walked and been hit by a pitch, respectively. Soat added a stolen base, as well.
The game was delayed in the bottom of the second inning due to lightning in the area, and following a 70-minute stoppage in play, the Mastodons added a run in the fourth inning to lead 4-1. Senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-4) doubled to open the frame, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Grant Wilson (0-2), and scored courtesy of an RBI ground ball from redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-4, RBI). It proved to be the game-winning run for the visitors.
Orwig (4-2) started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.0 innings for the win, scattering two hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and four walks. Junior Tanner McAninch tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, yielding just one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Classmate Mitchell Ley also pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Ley got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh after allowing a pair of singles and a walk … getting a fly ball out, a strikeout and a ground ball out. Sebastian (1) tossed the final scoreless inning to gain the save for the Mastodons, yielding one hit with no strikeouts and two walks.
Purdue was led offensively by Brett Carlson (2-4, RBI) with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Eddie De LaRiva (1-1) started for the Boilermakers and pitched just one-third of an inning in defeat, allowing two hits and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.
IPFW and Purdue will play again next Tuesday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Kokomo Municipal Stadium in Kokomo.
