IPFW Sweeps Doubleheader From North Dakota State 3-1, 3-2
5/14/2016 7:02:00 PM | Baseball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser hit a home run in game one, redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan hit a home run in game two, that also featured a walk-off RBI single by junior Jackson Boyce, as IPFW swept a Summit League baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State University on Saturday afternoon at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne. Senior Trevor Storie earned a complete game pitching victory in the nightcap for the host Mastodons (26-24, 10-16 Summit League) against the visiting Bison (27-23, 10-16 Summit League), while freshman Adam Neal gained the mound win and redshirt-junior Jake Weber the save in the opener. IPFW and NDSU will play the series finale on Sunday, May 15, at 1 p.m. in Fort Wayne … Vs. Cancer Day at Mastodon Field.
In game two, Logan (1-3, RBI) hit a one-out solo home run to right field to give IPFW the early 1-0 advantage. It was Logan's fifth homer this season. NDSU, however, scored single runs in both the third and sixth innings to lead 2-1 … and it remained a one-run deficit until the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the ninth, IPFW loaded the bases with no outs, as Logan, senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-2) and classmate Grant Wilson (0-0) drew back-to-back-to-back walks. Wilson was pinch-hitting, while senior Evan VanSumeren (0-0) pinch-ran for Logan. Redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (0-3, RBI) coaxed the fourth consecutive walk from Bison pitcher Sean Terres to force VanSumeren across the plate with the game-tying run. After a pitching change, Boyce (1-4, RBI) promptly singled to left center field to plate Valenzuela-Reece with the dramatic game-winning run in thrilling walk-off fashion.
Storie (6-5) started for IPFW and pitched a complete game triumph over the 9.0 innings, scattering seven hits and two runs, one earned, with three strikeouts and three walks. It was the first complete game effort this season for the Mastodons, and the first of Storie's collegiate career.
NDSU was led offensively by Drew Fearing (2-4) and Paul Funk (2-4 with two hits each, while Terres (1-2) pitched two-thirds of an inning in defeat, allowing no hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and the four walks.
In game one, IPFW took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning, getting a triple to right center field from redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (2-4) ahead of a ground ball RBI by Logan (0-4, RBI).
The Mastodons took a 3-1 run advantage with two runs in the third inning, courtesy of a two-run home run to left field by Kaiser (1-4, 2 RBI) that also scored senior Brandon Soat (0-3), who had been hit by a pitch before stealing second base, his seventh stolen base this season. It was Kaiser's team and Summit League leading 13th homer this season. It proved the game-winning hit as neither team scored the rest of the way.
Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps started for IPFW and pitched the first 3.0 innings, scattering two hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and four walks. Neal (1-0) gained his first collegiate victory with 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, yielding two hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior Jordan Martin pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Weber (9) tossed the final 1.0 scoreless inning for the save, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and no walks. It was his team-best ninth save to match his own Mastodon season record attained in 2015.
NDSU was led offensively by Jayse McLean (2-4, RBI) with two hits and an RBI, while Blake Stockert (2-5) started and pitched the first 6.0 innings in defeat, allowing four hits and three runs, all earned, with nine strikeouts and one walk.
