FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The IPFW baseball game against North Dakota State University on Sunday, May 15, at 1 p.m. at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne has been designated Vs. Cancer Day. The baseball program has partnered with the Vs. Cancer Foundation for the second consecutive year to help raise funds and awareness to cure kids' cancer. Following the game, the Mastodons will have their respective heads shaved in support of those going through cancer treatments.
"Vs. Cancer has teamed up with many college baseball programs like ours across America in trying to bring awareness and resources to national cancer research and local cancer treatment facilities across the United States," said IPFW head coach Bobby Pierce. "We hope to do our part in raising awareness and funds for childhood cancer. This is an important cause that our baseball program has rallied behind and it's a humbling reminder of how lucky all of us are. Last year, the community demonstrated tremendous support in attending the game and donating to the cause. I hope we all can repeat the great support we achieved last year. Thanks to our all of our supporters who have helped get the word out!"
The Vs. Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving kids' lives by empowering athletes and communities to fund lifesaving childhood cancer efforts. The Mastodons goal for 2016 is to raise $7,000, and they are about a quarter of the way there with $1,750 raised as of this week. Please visit the IPFW Baseball Team Fundraising page for more information and/or to donate now.
The Foundation partners with children's hospitals and cancer clinics in the communities of the teams that they partner with to make sure that kids currently in treatment for cancer will have a better life. Of the funds raised by the IPFW baseball team, 50% will go to the Vs. Cancer foundation to aid in research and 50% will be donated to Parkview Women's and Children's Hospital in Fort Wayne.
