IPFW Earns Series Sweep Past North Dakota State 2-1
5/15/2016 5:19:00 PM | Baseball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser and senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece each had two hits, and junior Jackson Boyce and redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker each had an RBI, to lead IFPW to a 2-1 Summit League baseball win past North Dakota State University Sunday afternoon at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne. Redshirt-senior Brandon Pease gained the pitching win for the host Mastodons (27-24, 11-16 Summit League), who swept the three-game series against the visiting Bison (27-24, 10-17 Summit League), while sophomore Evan Miller earned the mound save. IPFW, winners of six-straight games, will play its final non-league game of the season against Purdue University of the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the new Kokomo Municipal Stadium in Kokomo.
IPFW scored the only runs it would need in the second inning against NDSU. The Mastodons loaded the bases with no outs as redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (0-2) walked and moved to second on a single by Valenzuela-Reece (2-4), followed by a bunt single to the pitcher by senior Grant Wilson (1-3). Baker (1-2, RBI) drew the bases-loaded RBI walk to plate Logan with the first run, before Boyce (0-1, RBI) added a sacrifice fly RBI to center field that scored Reece. It proved the difference in the game, as Boyce earned his second consecutive game-winning RBI.
Kaiser (2-4) added two hits for the hosts, including his team-best 18th double this season. Boyce also added his team-best 13th stolen base.
IPFW used three pitchers that limited the Bison to four hits in the contest. Pease (3-2) started for the Mastodons and pitched the first 6.0 innings, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with five strikeouts and two walks. Junior Jordan Martin tossed 1.0 inning of scoreless relief, allowing no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Miller (1), making his first appearance out of the bullpen this season, tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings for his first save in 2016, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
NDSU was led offensively by Ben Petersen (3-4) with three hits, including two triples, while Taylor Sanders (0-3) had the lone RBI for the Bison. Jordan Harms (1-3) started on the mound and pitched the first 6.0 innings in defeat, allowing five hits and two runs, both earned, with six strikeouts and four walks.
Vs. Cancer Day Celebrated
The contest was designated Vs. Cancer Day, as the IPFW baseball program has partnered with the Vs. Cancer Foundation for the second consecutive year to help raise funds and awareness to cure kids' cancer. Following the game, the Mastodons had their respective heads shaved in support of those going through cancer treatments.
The Vs. Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving kids' lives by empowering athletes and communities to fund lifesaving childhood cancer efforts. The Mastodons goal for 2016 is to raise $7,000, and they are now past halfway there with $3,925 raised as of today. Please visit the IPFW Baseball Team Fundraising page for more information and/or to donate now.
The Foundation partners with children's hospitals and cancer clinics in the communities of the teams that they partner with to make sure that kids currently in treatment for cancer will have a better life. Of the funds raised by the IPFW baseball team, 50% will go to the Vs. Cancer foundation to aid in research and 50% will be donated to Parkview Women's and Children's Hospital in Fort Wayne.
