No. 3 IPFW Rallies Late Past No. 2 Omaha 8-6
5/25/2016 6:01:00 PM | Baseball
Omaha scored one run in the second inning and two runs in the third to take an early 3-0 advantage. IPFW got on the scoreboard with a run in the fourth inning to make it a 3-1 contest, but the Mavericks added single runs in the fourth and seventh innings for a 5-1 lead. The Mastodons scored another run in the eighth inning to make it 5-2, but Omaha plated a run in the eighth, as well, to lead 6-2 going into the ninth inning. IPFW, however, rallied for six runs in the ninth for the thrilling come-from-behind triumph … the 11th-straight win for the Mastodons and their 19th win in the last 24 games, while the 32 wins are a new school record, as well.
In the first, senior Brandon Soat (1-5, RBI) flied out to center field and classmate Kendall Whitman (0-4, RBI) grounded out to the pitcher, before Kaiser (2-4, 2 RBIs) singled up the middle for the first hit of the game and tournament. He was left on base, however, when classmate Shane Trevino (1-4) grounded out to second base.
In the second, Logan (2-5, 3 RBIs) grounded out to second base, senior Evan VanSumeren (2-5, RBI) grounded out to first base and classmate Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (0-3) flied out to center field.
In the third, redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-3) and junior Jackson Boyce (2-4) each grounded out to shortstop, while Soat grounded out to first base.
In the fourth, Whitman struck out swinging and Kaiser grounded out to third base, before Trevino and Logan each reached base via singles through the right side. VanSumeren promptly laced a clutch, 2-out RBI double down the right field line to score Trevino, but Valenzuela-Reece flied out to left field to end the at bat.
In the fifth, Baker singled to left field and Boyce followed with a single up the middle. Soat reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop that advanced Baker to third with one out. Whitman, however, struck out swinging and Kaiser flied out to left field … after just missing on a long foul ball on the wrong side of the left field foul line.
In the sixth, Trevino popped up to second base and Logan flied out to center field, before VanSumeren reached on a well-placed bunt single to the right side. Reece, however, grounded out to second base to end the at bat.
In the seventh, Baker grounded out to first base, while Boyce and Soat each flied out to left field.
In the eighth, Whitman popped up to second base ahead of Kaiser hitting a solo home run to left field for his team-best and league-leading 16th homer this season. The 16 home runs also lead all Division I shortstops in 2016. Trevino flied out to right field and Logan popped up to shortstop to end the at bat.
In the ninth, VanSumeren grounded out to first base ahead of Reece and Baker each drawing one-out walks. Boyce promptly followed with a single through the right side to load the bases for the top of the batting order. Soat hit a run-scoring single to right field to score Reece. Whitman was hit by a pitch to force Baker across the plate. Kaiser hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Boyce. Trevino coaxed a two-out walk to load the bases again. Logan promptly hit the clutch, two-out and three-run scoring double to left field scoring Soat, Whitman and Trevino with the tying and go-ahead runs. VanSumeren fouled out to left field to end the at bat.
Sophomore Evan Miller started for IPFW and pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Adam Neal tossed 3.0 innings of middle relief for the Mastodons, allowing five hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps (3-1) pitched 1.0 inning for the win, yielding two hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Redshirt-junior Jake Weber (12) tossed the final scoreless inning for his team-best 12th save, allowing three hits with one strikeout and no walks. The 12 saves are also a new season record for Weber.
Omaha was led offensively by Adam Caniglia (2-3, 2 RBIs) with two hits and two RBIs, including a home run. Eric Moreno (0-2) pitched one-third of an inning in defeat, allowing one hit and three runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and two walks.
