TULSA, Okla. -- No. 3 IPFW dropped two games at No. 1 Oral Roberts University Saturday as the host Golden Eagles won the 2016 Summit League Baseball Championship at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Senior Brandon Soat had four hits and two RBIs, while classmate Evan VanSumeren and redshirt-senior Greg Kaiser each collected three hits for the Mastodons (33-26), who dropped the first game, 4-1, before the Golden Eagles (38-19) won the title game, 14-3. Oral Roberts won its 17th Summit League Baseball Tournament championship and earned the league's automatic bid into next weekend's NCAA Regional. IPFW finishes 2016 with a school-record of 33-26, its first 30-win season, fifth 25-win season and 12th 20-win season in program history.
In the decisive game two, Oral Roberts scored three runs in the second inning for the early advantage, and added another run in the third to lead 4-0. IPFW got on the scoreboard with a run in the fourth inning to make it 4-1, but the Golden Eagles added two runs in the fourth to lead 6-1. The Mastodons scored two more runs in the fifth inning, but ORU answered with a run in the fifth, as well, to lead 7-3. The Golden Eagles scored two more runs in the sixth inning, three runs in the seventh inning and two more runs in the eighth inning for the final margin.
In the first, Soat (3-5, 2 RBIs) flied out to left field, senior Kendall Whitman (1-5) struck out swinging and Kaiser (2-5, RBI) popped out to second base to end the at bat.
In the second, redshirt-senior Shane Trevino (1-4) singled to right field and redshirt-sophomore Brock Logan (1-3) doubled to the wall in right for two runners in scoring position and no outs. VanSumeren (0-3), however, flied out to center field and senior Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece (1-3) did the same with the center fielder throwing out Trevino at the plate while trying to score on the play … ending the at bat.
In the third, redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-4) struck out swinging and junior Jackson Boyce (0-4) grounded out to second base, before Soat singled to right field with two outs. Whitman, however, flied out to center field to end the at bat.
In the fourth, Kaiser blasted a long solo home run to left field, his team-best 17th homer this season. The 17 home runs are also tops among the Summit League and the most among Division I shortstops, as well. That was it during the at bat, however, as Trevino flied out to left field, Logan flied out to right center field and VanSumeren ground out to first base.
In the fifth, Valenzuela-Reece drew a lead-off walk and Baker singled to left field to put two runners on base with no outs. Boyce reached on a fielder's choice ball to second base that left runners on the corners with one out. Soat promptly hit a two-run double to the wall in right center field to score both Valenzuela-Reece and Boyce. Whitman, however, flied out to left center field and Kaiser popped out to second base to end the at bat.

ORU was led offensively by Noah Cummings (2-4, 2 RBIs) with the two home runs, while Josh McMinn (6-2) started and pitched a complete game victory, scattering seven hits and one run, earned, with six strikeouts and no walks over 9.0 innings.
Greg Kaiser, Brock Logan, Brandon Soat and Evan VanSumeren were each named to Summit League Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team for their respective efforts this week in Tulsa.
In addition to the school-record 33 wins, IPFW posted its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1998-99, as the Mastodons won 20 of their final 27 games this season, including the 12-straight wins prior to today. IPFW made its second-straight league tournament championship game appearance, as well, and the program's seniors were a part of 118 wins over the last five seasons.
