Mastodons Hit Four Home Runs in Doubleheader Loss

Jessica Murray powered IPFW on the day going 4 for 7 with two home runs, a double, five RBIs and two runs scored. Demitra Burns finished 3 for 5 with a solo home run and three RBIs. Jenna Balthazor led the 'Dons with three runs on the afternoon while collecting two hits at the dish. Lauren Watson, Emily Olszewski, and Kelly Pevely each had a pair of hits.
IPFW jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first of game one. Balthazor led off the game with a double to left field and Watson followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Watson attempted to steal second, but the Leathernecks threw behind Balthazor at third, where no one was covering and allowing the ball to go into left field as Balthazor scored.
The Mastodons ran into trouble in the bottom of the first as Western Illinois plated eight runs in the inning. WIU added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly before scoring four more runs in the fourth inning, including a three-run home run.
After a leadoff walk in the fifth to Balthazor, the 'Dons were down to their final out. Murray stepped in a delivered on her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right-center. On the very next pitch, Pevely deposited the ball over the center field wall for her fourth homer of the year. IPFW was unable to continue the rally as the next batter was retired to end game one.
Starting pitcher Sarah Lazarowich took the loss in three inning of work while allowing nine runs and nine hits. Burns came in to pitch the final inning, surrendering four runs on two hits.
The Mastodons continued their hot streak to start game two as Balthazor and Watson led off the game with singles. One out later, Murray stepped in and connected on her second homer of the day, over the fence right-center.
WIU scored four times in the bottom of the first to take the lead. IPFW responded on the first pitch of the second inning as Burns connected on her second home run of the year to tie the game 4-4. The 'Dons regained the lead in the third. After Olszewski and Murray reached on consecutive singles to begin the inning, Olszewski stole home when the Leathernecks tried to retire Murray at second base.
The Mastodon lead was short lived as Western Illinois connected on a two-run home run after a leadoff triple in the bottom half of the third. WIU added another run in the fourth on back-to-back singles to take the lead 7-5.
Olszewski led off the fifth with an infield single and one out later, Pevely doubled to center. Later with two outs, Burns delivered again for the 'Dons with a two-run double to center and tying the game 7-7.
The Leathernecks used a pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good, as IPFW was unable to get a runner on in the top of the seventh.
Elizabeth Snodgrass pitched a complete game in the loss, allowing nine runs on 15 hits.
