9/24/2016 11:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer
The Mastodons answered each of Denver's first three goals with one of their own. The difference in the contest was a goal by the Pioneers' Graham Smith in the 79th minute to break a 3-3 tie and put Denver up for good. It was Smith's second tally of the match.
The 'Dons trailed 2-0 after 25 minutes before answering back with two straight scores. In the 32nd minute, Zach Tom scored his fourth goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Three minutes after halftime the 'Dons knotted the score at two on a tally by Jacob Murphy. The goal was assisted by Tom thanks to a long pass from midfield.
It stayed 2-2 until the 55th minute when a penalty kick put the Pioneers up 3-2. But less than two minutes later, off a free kick, Matthew Lieshout scored his first goal as a 'Don to tie the score once again. It stayed tied for more than 20 minutes until Smith's winner.
Fort Wayne was looking to snap Denver's 26-match regular season unbeaten streak which dates back to 2014.
The Pioneers move to 9-0-2 (1-0 Summit League) with the win. Fort Wayne falls to 5-4 (0-1). The 'Dons return to the pitch on Saturday (Oct. 1) against Oral Roberts at Hefner in a 7 p.m. start.
