11/4/2017 12:18:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
FARGO, N.D. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team put up a tough fight on the road at North Dakota State, but the Mastodons were unable to pull out the victory, falling in five sets 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-27, 15-10).
Nicole Rightnowar and Madison Jaqua each earned a double-double for the 'Dons. Rightnowar had a match-high 16 kills to go along with a season-high 21 digs. Jaqua finished with 29 assists and 12 digs, to go along with a match-high two aces. Victoria Mills nearly added a double-double as she finished with 23 assists and nine digs.
Natalie Seiler and Sydney Boerst each finished with 12 kills. Seiler also had a match-high, and tied a season-high, with seven blocks. Elizabeth Fuerst had nine kills and six blocks, Katie Crowe added eight kills and 13 digs, while Lauren Hoffman had seven kills.
Elizabeth Britner earned a match- and career-high 35 digs. Her 35 digs are the most by a Fort Wayne player since almost a year to the day, when former Mastodon Olivia Hahn had 39 digs also against NDSU on Nov. 4, 2016.
The opening set saw a pair of four-point runs by both teams midway through the frame, before NDSU used a 6-1 advantage to take the set. The Mastodons sprinted out of the gate in the second set scoring the first four points. The Bison took a 15-14 lead, but the 'Dons again used a four-point run to win the set.
In the third, it looked like Fort Wayne would repeat their second-set success with the first three points, but the 'Dons were unable to hang on as NDSU used a 5-0 advantage to take the lead and the set. Down by six in the fourth set, the Mastodons fought back with a 5-0 run to pull within one, 17-16. The Bison had multiple match points, but Fort Wayne fought them all off to end the set on a 6-1 advantage and force the fifth set. Unfortunately, the Mastodons ran out of steam in the fifth as NDSU jumped out to a 5-0 advantage to win the match.
Fort Wayne returns to action when it travels to Western Illinois on Tuesday, November 7 for a 7 p.m. ET match.
