Pevely, Watson and Davis Earn Two Hits in a Pair of Losses

Kelly Pevely, Amber Davis and Lauren Watson all went 2 for 5 on the day. Pevely connected on a solo home run in game one, while Davis had an RBI double in game two. Jenna Balthazor scored twice while Jessica Murray drove in two runs on the day.
In the first game against UT Martin, the Skyhawks jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the first and three more in the second. The Mastodons got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second as Davis scored after reaching on a leadoff single.
The Skyhawks added two more runs in the third on a home run, and the 'Dons responded with a two-run double down the left field line by Murray. UTM added three runs in the fourth before Pevely connected on Fort Wayne's first home run of the season, a solo shot to center. The Skyhawks scored three more times in the top of the fifth as the Mastodons stranded a pair of runners in the bottom half to end the game.
Olivia White took the loss in the circle for the 'Dons, throwing 3 1-3 innings while striking out three. Elizabeth Snodgrass came on to pitch the final 1 2-3 innings.
In the nightcap, Fort Wayne jumped on Akron early as Davis doubled home Balthazor who had reached on a bunt single in the top of the first. The Zips answered in the bottom of the inning with a one-out, two-run home run.
Akron added a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The 'Dons closed the gap to one as they put up two runs in the fourth. Back-to-back walks to begin the inning led to an RBI fielder's choice by Kristen Zarate. An infield single from Watson and a throwing error added the second run.
On the rubber, Bailey Benefiel threw five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits to take the loss. Darby Shaw made her first appearance of the season, throwing one inning and allowing a hit while striking out a batter.
Fort Wayne will look for payback as the two teams meet again tomorrow, February 19, at 11 a.m. ET. The final game of the tournament will have the Mastodons facing host Alabama State at 1:30 p.m. ET.
