MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Fort Wayne softball's Elizabeth Snodgrass held Akron to one run in the opening game and Jenna Balthazor drove in a pair in game two, but it was not enough as the Mastodons fell to Akron 1-0 and Alabama State 10-4 to conclude the Black & Gold Tournament.
Balthazor finished the day 2 for 7 with two RBIs. Kelly Pevely and Sierra Miranda each finished with two hits. Nine different Mastodons collected a hit on the day while Sydney Windlan and Lauren Watson also drove in a run.
In the morning game, the 'Dons had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second. With one out, Pevely and Miranda reached on back-to-back singles. One out later, Taylor Bolyard loaded the bases with a single through the right side. The Mastodons were unable to bring home a run as the final out was recorded.
The lone run of the game came in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by the Zips. Fort Wayne put the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff walk by Pevely, but was unable to bring her home.
Snodgrass suffered the loss, despite throwing a complete game, allowing an unearned run while scattering six hits.
Watson led off the afternoon game with a single up the middle and stole second, but was unable to score. Alabama State scored in the bottom half of the inning on back-to-back singles and a Mastodon error. The 'Dons put up three runs in the top of the second. A pair of ASU errors led to the first Fort Wayne run with the bases loaded. Watson reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Miranda to score and the final run came on an RBI single up the middle by Balthazor that plated Caitlyn DeLong.
The Hornets responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the second and five more in fourth, three of which came with two outs. Fort Wayne was able to load the bases in the sixth, but was only able to manage one run on a single up the middle from Balthazor.
Darby Shaw made her first start in the circle for the 'Dons, throwing three innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits in the loss. Olivia White came on to pitch 2-3 of an inning, surrendering five runs. Bailey Benefiel entered for the final 2 1-3 innings and retired all seven batters she faced.
Fort Wayne returns to action for the two-day Black & Orange Challenge hosted by Mercer February 25 and 26.
