Pevely Homers as Mastodons Drop Doubleheader

Lauren Watson and Kelly Pevely each finished the day with three hits. Pevely connected on her second home run of the season in game two. Sierra Miranda added a double while Caitlyn DeLong drove in a run.
Watson led off the first game of the day with a single but the 'Dons were unable to bring her around. Marist scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added two more in the fourth. The Mastodons got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Pevely singled before a pair of walks to Amber Davis and Jenna Balthazor loaded the bases. DeLong stepped in a delivered a sacrifice fly to right, allowing pinch-runner Kristen Zarate to score from third.
The Red Foxes scored twice in the bottom of the six to extend their lead. Miranda doubled to lead off the top of the seventh, but the next three outs were recorded to end the game.
Elizabeth Snodgrass started the game in the circle, taking the loss after throwing 5 2-3 innings and surrendering five runs, four earned, on eight hits. Darby Shaw came in to start the sixth, throwing 1-3 an inning, and allowed two runs on three hits.
Game two saw the Mastodons take an early lead on Pevely's solo home run to center in the fourth. The 'Dons put runners on in both the fifth and the sixth but were unable to score. Mercer pushed across five runs in the bottom of the fifth before tacking on four more in the sixth.
On the rubber, Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss after tossing 4 2-3 innings and surrendering five runs on five hits while striking out two. Olivia White came on for the final 1-3 inning, allowing four runs on four hits.
Fort Wayne wraps up the Black & Orange Challenge with a rematch against Marist and Mercer at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
