Softball Sweeps Final Day in Georgia

MACON, Ga. - The Fort Wayne softball team swept the final day of the Black & Orange Challenge, defeating Marist 1-0 on Caitlyn DeLong's walk-off single, before defeating host Mercer 4-3.
DeLong led the way for the Mastodons on the day going 3 for 7 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Sydney Windlan, Lauren Watson and Kelly Pevely all collected a pair of hits. Pevely also connected on her third home run of the season and drove in a pair of runs. Courtney Holm scored twice, once in each game.
After escaping a jam in the first inning, starting pitcher Olivia White did not allow a Marist hit until the fifth inning with one out. White surrendered a pair of hits in the sixth, but again pitched out of the jam to keep the Red Foxes off the scoreboard.
The 'Dons put runners on in each of the first three innings and again in the sixth, but were unable to push across a run.
DeLong's walk-off single came with two outs in the seventh. After a one-out walk to Maria Palmegiani, pinch-runner Holm advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later, DeLong drove a 1-0 pitch down the left field line, scoring Holm from second.
White earned her first win as a Mastodon with the complete game shutout. She scattered three hits while striking out four batters.
Fort Wayne opened the scoring in the nightcap with two runs in the top of the third. Windlan led off the inning with a single before Pevely connected on her second home run of the weekend, a two-run shot down the left field line. The Bears responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, including a leadoff solo home run.
The Mastodons scored its final two runs in the top of the fifth. Pevely led off the frame with a double. Two outs later, Kristen Zarate scored Holm, who was pinch running, with a single up the middle. DeLong followed with a double to center, scoring Zarate and giving Fort Wayne the lead.
Bailey Benefiel came on in relief with a runner on and no one out in the bottom of the sixth, escaping the jam. Mercer loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but once again Benefiel eluded trouble as she struck out the final batter to end the game.
Elizabeth Snodgrass started in the circle for the 'Dons, picking up her first win of the season after throwing five inning and allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out two. Benefiel earned her first save of the year, surrendering one hit in two innings of work and two strikeouts.
Fort Wayne returns to action when it travels to Clearwater, Florida, for the USF Series - Under Armour Invitational, March 3-5.
