4/1/2017 7:33:00 PM | Softball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne softball squad was unable complete a pair of comebacks in its Summit League opener as the Mastodons fell to North Dakota State 4-1 and 8-1.
Leading the way for the 'Dons with two hits on the day were Taylor Bolyard, Maria Palmegiani and Jessica Murray. Sierra Miranda and Lauren Watson each finished with a hit and an RBI.
Fort Wayne scored first with a run in the bottom of the second of game one. Murray led off the inning with a single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a passed ball. Murray came home when Miranda singled up the middle.
NDSU tied the game on a leadoff home run in the third. The 'Dons put a pair of runners on in the fifth but were unable to break the tie. The Bison broke the tie in the sixth on a three-run home run. Fort Wayne put a runner on with one out in the bottom of the seventh but the rally stalled as the final two outs were recorded.
In the circle, Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss after tossing 5 1-3 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out four. Demitra Burns came on for the final 1 2-3, while not allowing a hit and recording a strikeout.
The second game of the day had NDSU jumping out early with a run in the second, two in the third and two more in the fourth. The Mastodons had an opportunity to cut the deficit to one as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth. A hit batter and a pair of singles by Brooke Imel and Bolyard had the bases juiced but the team was unable to push across a run.
The 'Dons were going for a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. With a runner on, Fort Wayne collected three straight hits as Bolyard and Jenna Balthazor singled to load the bases. Watson brought a run home with an infield single. The next Mastodon batter nearly found green in the outfield, but the Bison were able to snag the line drive to end the game.
Olivia White started on the mound lasting 3 2-3 innings to take the loss. White allowed five runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Darby Shaw came on for the final 3 1-3 innings, surrendering three runs, two earned, on three hits with a strikeout.
