Mastodons Drop Series Opener to Coyotes

VERMILLION, S.D. - On a very cold and windy afternoon, the Fort Wayne softball team was unable get their bats warmed up as the Mastodons fell to South Dakota 7-0.
All four Mastodon hits came from different players in Lauren Watson, Sydney Windlan, Sierra Miranda and Brooke Imel . Miranda's went for extra bases, a double.
The Coyotes score five runs in the bottom of the first, including two unearned runs. South Dakota added an unearned run in the third before scoring the final run in the sixth.
Fort Wayne broke up the no-hitter in the fifth when Miranda doubled to right-center. The 'Dons got three hits in the top of the sixth but were unable to put a run on the scoreboard.
In the circle, Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss, throwing a complete game. She allowed seven runs, four earned, on 10 hits.
The two teams will wrap up their Summit League series tomorrow, April 29, with a doubleheader starting at noon ET.
