Cross Country Opens 2017 at Valparaiso

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mastodons will open the 2017 campaign at the Crusader Open on Friday (Sept. 1). This will be the first time the Mastodons have competed in a meet at Valparaiso since 2009.

MEN'S PREVIEW (6K)
The Mastodons are coming off a fifth place finish at the 2016 Summit League Championship last October where Sam Williamson, Bret Unger and Gabe O'Keefe were Fort Wayne's top three finishers. Fort Wayne returns key experience as last year's squad didn't feature a single senior. Friday's event will be a 6K. The 'Dons ran one 6K event last year, with Logan Kitchen winning the WIU Early Bird Invite in a time of 19:07.0. The Mastodons have added one freshman (Sammy Moran) to this season's roster.
WOMEN'S PREVIEW (5K)
The Fort Wayne women's team also earned a fifth place finish at the 2016 Summit League Championship. They return three of their top five finishers from last year's league meet for the 2017 season. Included in that group is Emma Rafuse who earned a top 20 finish for the Mastodons with a time of 22:43.0. Freshman Sophia Hirzel will be joining the Mastodons for the 2017 season. Friday's race will be a 5K event. Rebecca Sippel ran last season's top 5K time of 18:22.0.
