10/19/2018 10:55:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - When things looked darkest, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team found a way to fight and claw its way back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Omaha 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 16-14) in the Mastodon's annual Pink Out match to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation.
Nicole Rightnowar had a career night as she finished with a career- and match-high 26 kills. She added 10 digs to earn her 15th double-double of the season. Her 26 kills are the most by a Mastodon player since Somer Johnson also had 26 against Green Bay on Sept. 18, 2015.
Sydney Boerst added nine kills and Madelyn Wurster came off the bench to finish with eight, including the final two points of the match. Boerst also finished with a season- and match-high eight blocks. Madison Jaqua powered the offensive attack with a match-high 50 assists and adding in nine digs. Elizabeth Britner led all players with a match-high 19 digs.
The Mavericks scored five straight points early in the opening set, as the 'Dons were unable to overcome deficit. The Mastodons broke a 16-16 tie in the second with three straight points. Omaha would rally, scoring six of the next seven points to win the frame. UNO scored the first two points of the third set, but after that it was all Mastodons. The 'Dons scored nine of the next 10 points, including six consecutive.
Tied 13-13 in the fourth, the 'Dons used a 4-0 run to take the lead as they forced a fifth set. Things were not going in the Mastodon's favor in the fifth set, as Omaha jumped out to a 7-4 advantage. The 'Dons closed the gap to 9-8, but the Mavs answered with three straight points. The Mastodons rallied, going on a 6-1 run to have match point. UNO fought off the first, but the 'Dons got back-to-back kills from Wurster, giving them the comeback victory.
