Bernt and Lopez Score In 2-2 Tie At Detroit Mercy

DETROIT – Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer played Detroit Mercy to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday (Oct. 2) afternoon in a non-league match.
Mastodon goalkeeper Tor Erik Larsen kept the game scoreless with a penalty kick save in the 25thminute of the first half. Two minutes later Detroit Mercy struck for the first goal of the game. Garrett Weaver scored, assisted by Justin Murray.
The two teams went to half knotted at one after Romain Lopez scored in the 35thminute for the Mastodons. Lopez scored from about 25 yards out, assisted by Alex Joneson. It was Lopez' fourth goal of the season.
The 'Dons controlled the second half, holding a 9-2 edge in shots. Ryan Bernt scored off a loose ball in the box to put the 'Dons up 2-1 with 13 minutes left. The freshman now has two goals on the season.
The lead didn't last as long as the Mastodons would have liked. Detroit Mercy responded with the equalizer in the 82ndminute. Jason Blackwell scored the tally, assisted by Grant Harrison.
The teams played an extra 20 minutes, but neither team could earn the golden goal.
Detroit Mercy held a slight 19-18 edge in shots and 5-4 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.
Purdue Fort Wayne is now 6-4-1. Detroit Mercy moves to 1-9-1. The 'Dons are back at it on Friday at No. 4 Denver in Summit League action.
