MADISON, Wis. – No Summit League student-athlete has ever run an NCAA Women's Cross Country National Championship course faster than Emma Rafuse. The Purdue Fort Wayne senior finished 58th at the 2018 NCAA Championships on Saturday (Nov. 17) morning with a time of 20:45.18 on a snowy, cold day in her native Wisconsin.
Rafuse's time of 20:45.18 topped the 20:47.5 Faithy Kamangila of Oral Roberts ran in 2004. Kamangila finished in 11th place.
Rafuse's 58th place finish is the third best finish ever of a Summit League runner at nationals.
"Emma had a fantastic race, especially for it being her first time at the National meet," Purdue Fort Wayne head coach Ashley Botham said. "Her ability to race consistently regardless of weather paid off big today with temperatures in the 20's and two inches of snow on the course. She put herself in a great position right from the start and ran strong the whole way. She was projected to finish 115th based on pre-race rankings and finished in 58th! She doesn't make excuses and she is always tough, that showed true today. Emma has the mindset of a champion and I couldn't be prouder of her season."
Colorado won the team title with Colorado's Dani Jones (19:42.8) winning the individual title.
