Mastodons Rumble Past Cougars to Win Season Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team kicked the 2018-19 season in style, as the Mastodons took down IU Kokomo 87-50. The team hosted its annual Fitness Day for 600 local elementary school students, who were in attendance cheering on the 'Dons
Five Purdue Fort Wayne players reached double figures, led by De'Jour Young with 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Sierra Bell did a little bit of everything for the Mastodons, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, eight steals, and five assists. The eight steals by Bell are tied for second most in program history, and the most since Kayla Drake had 10 at South Dakota State on Jan. 22, 2011.
Sh'Toya Sanders and Kierstyn Repp each had 13 points. Jaelencia Williams came off the bench to finish with 10. Anna Lappenküper led the 'Dons with six assists.
After trading baskets to open the game, the Mastodons went on a 13-3 run, including scoring eight straight at one point. The 'Dons added an 11-0 run to end the first quarter and stretch through the opening minutes of the second as the Cougars were never close again. Purdue Fort Wayne extended its lead to 21 points at halftime, as the Mastodons led 47-26. The Mastodons finished the second quarter shooting 73.3% (11-of-15) from the field.
The 'Dons finished the day shooting 35-of-62 (56.5%) from the field, 5-of-18 (27.8%) beyond the arc, and 12-of-20 (60%) at the free throw line.
Purdue Fort Wayne takes to the road for the first time when the Mastodons travel to Western Michigan Thursday, November 8 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
