Late Rally Comes Up Short on Final Day of Black & Gold Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Fort Wayne softball pitcher Bailey allowed just one earned run against the Akron Zips, but the Mastodons were unable to get their offense going as they fell 1-0 on the final day of the Black & Gold Tournament.
The lone run allowed by Benefiel came in the top of the first after a leadoff walk, stolen base, and a groundout. Benefiel went the distance, allowing five hits and finishing with a strikeout and two walks.
Fort Wayne had an early chance in the second inning after a one-out walk to Stephanie Hanic. Lacey Wilzbacher singled down the left field line, but was thrown out going for second. The 'Dons also put the leadoff runner on in the fourth on a walk.
In the sixth, Payton Hollis doubled with one out and after a groundout, Morganne Denny walked to put runners on the corners. Akron made a diving play down the first base line to snag Maria Palmegiani's line drive, ending the rally.
The Mastodon's final opportunity came in the bottom of the seventh as Hanic led off with a single to center. Two outs later, pinch hitter Rachel Everson walked to put the winning run on base, but a groundout ended the game.
Fort Wayne returns to action February 23-25 for the Belmont/TSU Winter Warmup.
