Softball Drops Pair of One Run Games

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Fort Wayne softball team dropped a pair of one-run games during the final day of the Belmont/TSU Winter Warmup, as the Mastodons fell to North Dakota 2-1 and Belmont 3-2.
Courtney Holm led the 'Dons going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Marian Palmegiani also collected two hits on the day. Five other Mastodons each collected one hit.
It was a pitcher's duel in game one as Mastodon starter Shaina Eyre and Fighting Hawk pitcher Kaylin VanDomelen allowed a hit in the first inning, before not allowing another until the sixth. North Dakota scored in the bottom of the sixth on a Fort Wayne error.
The Mastodons got the run back in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Holm led off with a walk, before a sacrifice bunt and a groundout moved her to third. Holm scored on a wild pitch strike three to Stephanie Hanic. The celebration was short lived for the 'Dons as UND got a two-out single to bring home the winning run.
Eyre suffered the hard luck loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits.
The Mastodons fell behind early in game two against Belmont, as the Bruins scored two runs on a double in the bottom of the first. The 'Dons got a run back in the second when Holm delivered an RBI single. Belmont added a run in the third on a solo home run. Fort Wayne plated its final run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Brooke Imel.
Starting pitcher Bailey Benefiel threw a complete game in the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits, dropping her record on the season to 5-2.
Fort Wayne heads back to Tennessee for the Blues City Classic March 2-4 hosted by Memphis.
