INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Damian Helm allowed one run in 7.0 innings on Saturday (March 10) afternoon to help the Fort Wayne Mastodons defeat the Butler Bulldogs 5-1 at Bulldog Park.
Helm gave up just four hits and moved his record to 2-2. Freshman Dalton O'Boyle threw the final two innings. He didn't allow a run to pick up his second save of the season.
The 'Dons never trailed on the day. Brady Hettinger opened the game with an infield single. He stole second, moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a ground out to give the 'Dons a first inning run. The one run would be nearly all the offense the 'Dons would need.
Fort Wayne went up 2-0 with a run in the fourth when Brock Logan scored on a wild pitch. Butler tallied their only run in the fifth, before Fort Wayne answered with an RBI double by Shannon Baker in the sixth. The 'Dons added to their 3-1 lead in the ninth thanks to a Travis Upp two-RBI double. His double scored Hettinger and Mike Snyder. Upp's double was the only hit by either team with runners in scoring position on the day.
Fort Wayne chased Butler starter Garrett Christman after 5.2 innings. His record drops to 2-2.
Butler falls to 11-2 on the season. Fort Wayne improves to 4-8. The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday.
