Omaha Takes Series Finale From Baseball In High Scoring Affair

The Mastodons scored in the first inning on a Shannon Baker sacrifice fly. It was a 5-1 Omaha lead in the fifth when the 'Dons responded in a big way. Fort Wayne scored six runs in the fifth thanks to five hits, three walks and a hit by pitch. Baker, Brandon Yoho, Jacob Dickson, Robert Young III, Dylan Wilbert and Brady Hettinger each had an RBI in the inning.
The big fifth inning finished with the 'Dons ahead 7-5, but Omaha answered with five of their own in the bottom half of the fifth. Thomas DeBonville and Grand Suponchick each had a 2-RBI hit in the fifth for Omaha. The Mavs would never surrender their lead.
Hettinger finished with four hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the 'Dons. Mike Snyder had a pair of hits, a walk and scored a run.
Shane Odzark started for the 'Dons. He went four innings and picked up a no-decision. Chase Phelps (0-1) took the loss in relief. Andrew Brighton threw 2.2 innings and earned the win. He is 1-1.
Omaha is now 7-12 (3-0 Summit League). Fort Wayne is 4-12 (0-3 Summit League).
The Mastodons are back in action on Friday (March 23) in a 3 p.m. start against North Dakota State. It will be the 2018 home opener for the 'Dons.
