North Dakota State Edges Fort Wayne 2-1 In Home Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Brandon Phelps allowed just one run in 7.0 innings but Fort Wayne fell to North Dakota State 2-1 on Friday (March 23) afternoon in the 2018 home opener for the Mastodons.
Phelps was the tough-luck loser, with his record falling to 2-2. He fanned four Bison while issuing just one walk. Cameron Boyd threw the final two innings, allowing one run and three hits.
North Dakota State's Riley Johnson also went seven innings. He allowed no runs and moved his record to 3-3 with the win. Kevin Folman picked up his third save of the season for NDSU.
The game was scoreless for five innings until NDSU put a run on the board in the sixth. Bennett Hostetler tripled to right field and scored on the next play when Mason Pierzchalski knocked him in with a sacrifice fly. Jayse McLean drove in a run in the eighth to make it 2-0.
The Mastodons put runners on first and second to start the eighth. After two consecutive strikeouts, Jacob Dickson used some two-out hitting to score Garrett Mohler. Mohler was pinch running for Brock Logan. However Mike Snyder, pinch running for Shannon Baker who had three hits in the game, and Dickson would be stranded to end the frame.
The 'Dons out-hit the bison 9-8 but stranded two runners each of the first three innings.
North Dakota State is now 9-11 (2-2 Summit League). Fort Wayne falls to 4-13 (0-4 Summit League). The two clubs will play at 2 p.m. on Saturday (March 24).
