Softball Falls to Crusaders in Non-League Action

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Fort Wayne softball team dropped a midweek road contest to Valparaiso 4-0.
Maria Palmegiani led the Mastodons going 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk. Lacey Wilzbacher, Lauren Watson and Demitra Burns also collected hits for the 'Dons.
The Crusaders would score the only run they would need in the bottom of the first on a two-out double. Valpo added three runs in the sixth, two of which came with two outs.
Fort Wayne's best opportunities to score came in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Wilzbacher and Watson reached on two-out singles, but were left stranding. In the seventh, Palmegiani led off with a single and Burns followed with a single of her own. The rally stalled there as the next three batters were retired to end the game.
In the circle, Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss, allowing only one earned run on six hits while striking out seven in 5 2-3 innings. Addie Benham came on for the final 1-3 an inning, allowing two hits.
After two months on the road, Fort Wayne will finally host a home game when the Mastodons take on Summit League rival South Dakota beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 13 at 2 p.m.
