Mastodons Out-Hit Purdue, But Fall 7-5

Lauren Watson led the 'Dons on the day going 3-for-4 at the plate. Stephanie Hanic finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Maria Palmegiani added a home run and two RBIs, while Jenna Balthazor and Sydney Windlan each had a hit and an RBI.
The Mastodons scored first, as they pushed across two runs on five hits in the top of the second. With runners on second and third, Balthazor delivered on an RBI single to score Morganne Denny. Windlan followed with a single up the middle, scoring Hanic from third.
The Mastodons added to their lead in the third when Hanic stepped in and drove a 1-0 pitch to straight away center, clearing the fence for her third home run of the season. In the bottom half of the inning, Purdue scored five runs, all of them unearned, and with two outs.
Purdue added its final runs of the game in the fifth, scoring both runs with two outs.
Fort Wayne closed the gap in the top of the seventh. After a leadoff single by Watson, one out later Palmegiani took the first pitch she saw and deposited it over the left field wall for her third home run of the year. The Mastodons were unable to get another runner on as the final two outs were recorded.
Bailey Benefiel started for the 'Dons in the circle, throwing four innings, allowing five runs, none of which were earned, on two hits while striking out five batters. Shaina Eyre came on for the final two innings, surrendering two runs on two hits with a strikeout.
Fort Wayne returns home to host IUPUI tomorrow, April 18, at 3 p.m.
