FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Chase Phelps threw 7.2 scoreless, one-hit innings for the Mastodons on Saturday (April 21) as Fort Wayne finished off a sweep of the Omaha Mavericks thanks to a 5-0 victory.
Phelps, in his first start of the season, was nearly untouchable. He gave up just one hit and three walks. He struck out six Mavericks. The only hit he gave up was an infield single with one out in the seventh. Braden Rogers hit a ball to the right of Fort Wayne shortstop Jack Lang. Lang dove to stop the ball, but Rogers was well safe at first by the time Lang's throw arrived.
Phelps is now 1-1 thanks to his first career victory. Fort Wayne chased Omaha starter Jake Pennington (2-6) in the third inning. Fort Wayne scored all five of their runs in the third. The big hit was a bases loaded double by Mike Snyder. His hit to deep left center scored Dylan Wilbert, Robert Young III and Lang. Snyder later came around to score on a Shannon Baker RBI single. Jacob Dickson scored Fort Wayne's final run of the game on an Omaha throwing error.
Phelps handed the ball to Cameron Boyd in the eighth after Omaha put runners on first and second with two outs. Boyd couldn't earn a save, but closed out the game for the 'Dons. He earned a strikeout to end the eighth and allowed only a walk in the ninth.
Omaha falls to 13-22 (8-7 Summit League). Fort Wayne improves to 9-24 (5-13 Summit League). The 'Dons out-scored Omaha 27-2 in the series.
The 'Dons are back in action on Wednesday (April 25) when Dayton comes to town for a 3 p.m. first pitch at Mastodon Field.
