Dickson & Young Homer But ‘Dons Fall 8-6 To SDSU In Opener
4/27/2018 6:46:00 PM | Baseball
Both clubs scored a single run in the second inning. It was a Zak Kellogg sacrifice fly for the Mastodons in the frame that scored Dylan Wilbert and knotted the game at one.
The 'Dons took their only lead of the game in the third on a two-run home run by Jacob Dickson. It was his third of the season.
South Dakota State answered with two runs in the fourth to tie it and then three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to go up 8-3. Fort Wayne made it 8-5 with two runs in the sixth and then a Robert Young III solo shot in the eighth made it 8-6. However the 'Dons would get no closer.
Young is tied for third in the league with five home runs.
The Mastodons worked six walks on the day. Andrew Lawvere had two walks and recorded a single. He also stole a base.
Brady Stover went the required five innings to earn a win for SDSU. He is now 3-1. Alex Marro earned his fourth save of the season. Brandon Phelps took the loss. He is now 4-4 after throwing six innings. Trevor Armstrong threw three scoreless innings for the 'Dons in relief.
Fort Wayne falls to 9-26 (5-14 Summit League). South Dakota State improves to 11-23 (9-7 Summit). The two clubs will play game two of the three-game set on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
