FARGO, N.D. - The season came to a close for the Fort Wayne softball team, as the Mastodons dropped a pair of games in the Summit League Championship. The 'Dons fell in its opening game of the day to South Dakota State 8-0, before falling to Omaha 11-1 in an elimination game.
Fort Wayne ends its season with a 19-35 overall record, seven wins better than a season ago. The Mastodons have improved their win total each of the last three seasons, including wins over North Dakota State and in the Summit League Championship for the first time since 2014.
Lauren Watson finished with two hits on the afternoon, both coming against Omaha as she finished 2-for-3. Maria Palmegiani, Morganne Denny, Stephanie Hanic and Demitra Burns all had a hit for the Mastodons.
In the first game of the day, SDSU scored in the bottom of the third with a three-run home run. The Jackrabbits tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, and three runs in the sixth.
The Mastodons best chances for a run came in the first and fifth innings. In the first, Lacey Wilzbacher led off the game getting hit by a pitch. A pair of fielder's choices and a single from Burns put runners on the corners. Hanic led off the fifth inning with a single through the left side. She moved to second and then third on a pair of groundouts, but the 'Dons were unable to bring her home.
Shaina Eyre took the complete game loss in the circle to finish the season 6-11.
The elimination game saw Omaha score three runs in the bottom of the first. The Mastodons loaded the bases in the second, but were unable to score. The Mavericks added a run in the third on a solo home run before scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Fort Wayne got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth. Wilzbacher led off the inning with a walk. Two outs later, Palmegiani drove her in with a single up the middle.
Bailey Benefiel took the complete game loss in her final game as a Mastodon, ending the season with a 12-14 record.
Palmegiani and Benefiel were named to the All-Tournament Team.
