WIU Takes Series Opener 6-3 As Fort Wayne’s Rally Falls Short

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois defeated Fort Wayne 6-3 on Friday (May 4) afternoon in a Summit League baseball contest.
WIU went up 2-0 after a pair of first inning runs. Three runs in the sixth put the Leathernecks up 5-0. Drue Galassi drove in two with a double in the sixth.
Fort Wayne got one back in the eighth when Brady Hettinger walked with the bases loaded. However a double play ended the frame and Fort Wayne's chance at more runs.
The Mastodons opened the ninth with three straight singles. Zak Kellogg knocked in Dylan Wilbert on the third hit of the inning. This threat forced WIU to bring in their closer Colan Borchers. The 'Dons added another on a sacrifice fly by Nathan Phillips, but it would be Fort Wayne's final run of the game. Borchers worked two strikeouts to end the game and give Borchers his fourth save of the year.
Brandon Phelps threw a complete game for the 'Dons, allowing six runs (five earned) in 8.0 innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. Phelps is now 4-5. WIU starter Ryan Dunne allowed one run in eight innings. Dunne picked up the win to move his record to 3-6)
WIU improves to 11-25 (8-10 Summit). The 'Dons fall to 10-28 (6-26 Summit). Threatening weather has forced the two clubs to adjust this weekend's schedule. They will now play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. ET to conclude the set.
