FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team begins regular season play with a matchup against the Ball State Cardinals on Friday at 5 p.m.

Scouting the Mastodons
The Mastodons are moving into their fifth season under head coach Jason Burr and first under assistant Alyssa Krause. The 'Dons have six seniors, six juniors, eight sophomores and three true freshmen. Purdue Fort Wayne returns their top two scorers from 2017 with Deanna Hecht and Kendall Quinn, who scored four goals each.

The Cardinals come to Fort Wayne with a 1-0 exhibition win over Eastern Illinois on Friday (Aug. 10). Ball State has 10 seniors, five juniors and seven sophomores on the squad with 10 freshmen joining the team.
When We Last Met
Ball State took a 2-0 victory over the Mastodons in Muncie, Indiana. Kendall Quinn, Chani Warfield and Deanna Hecht each had a shot on goal for the 'Dons. Ball State returns Sam Kambol, who scored one goal in this matchup.
New Faces in the Summit City
Purdue Fort Wayne has five new faces joining the women's soccer program this season. Emily Gunsett and Lorah Pund join the squad as sophomores, while Kayla Wisniewski, Makenzie Coe and Emily Melchi come in as true freshmen. Pund and Melchi will vie for the starting goalkeeper spot with senior Haley Lydon and sophomore Emma Gaggioli. Wisniewski will fight for a spot on the front line, Coe for the midfield and Gunsett for defense.
Defensive-Minded 'Dons
The Mastodons held nine of its opponents scoreless in the first half of each contest in 2017. Detroit Mercy, Evansville, Youngstown State, Western Michigan, Valparaiso, Robert Morris, Western Illinois, Denver and Oral Roberts were all unable to score on the 'Dons in the first 45 minutes of play. For 2018, four of the Mastodons' starting defensive players return to the back line.
Fleming is Fast
Paityn Fleming's goal against Denver (Oct. 27, 2017) was the fastest in Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer program history. She scored against the Pioneers just 28 seconds after the opening kick. Fleming surpassed former teammate Gaby Romo for the fastest goal, with Romo's 0:34 goal against IUPUI in 2016 serving as the record holder for just over one year.
Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne took a 6-0 exhibition win over cross-town team Saint Francis. Freshman Kayla Wisniewski scored three goals against the Cougars.
