Lightning Delay Not Enough to Stop 'Dons at Valpo
8/26/2018 9:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
VALPARAISO, Ind. – After lightning struck near Valparaiso on Sunday (Aug. 26), the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons had a strike of their own, taking down the Crusaders 2-1 at Brown Field.
Just minutes before kickoff, lightning in the area forced the Mastodons and Crusaders into the locker rooms. One hundred and seven minutes later, the Mastodons came out ready to go, with Kailyn Wade scoring just 1:23 from the opening kick. Hannah Kroger maneuvered on the right side of the 18, sent in a pass to Breanna Buche, who headed it to Wade. Valparaiso evened the score in the 14th minute with a penalty kick from Cory Griffith. The remainder of the first half was relatively quiet, with a few more shots on goal, but no major scoring threats.
In the 68th minute, Kroger fed Kendall Quinn from beyond the midfield, then Quinn broke away to beat the keeper one-on-one. This gave the 'Dons the 2-1 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the match.
Quinn finished with four shots, all on goal. Purdue Fort Wayne placed seven of its nine shots on goal for the night.
Lorah Pund picked up her first win in goal in a Mastodon uniform. The Fort Wayne native picked up three saves while in the net for the second half. The Crusaders had several scoring opportunities late with some corner kicks, but could not convert thanks to Pund and a stingy Purdue Fort Wayne defense. Valpo had seven corners in the second half, but could not score on any of them.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 1-2-1, while Valparaiso falls to 1-2-1. The Mastodons are back in action on Friday (Aug. 31) when they travel to face the Ramblers of Loyola Chicago. The 'Dons return home on Monday (Sept. 2) to face Tennessee Tech.
