Men's Soccer Earns A 3-0 Shutout Over Previously One-Loss Northern Kentucky

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer followed a scoreless first half with three second half goals to shutout Horizon League member Northern Kentucky on Monday (Sept. 17) 3-0 at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
While the 'Dons didn't score in the opening 45 minutes, they earned several opportunities in the first 30 minutes. A bouncing shot from Romain Lopez hit the crossbar early on and minutes later Alex Frank saw his shot knocked away by a Northern Kentucky defender just feet from going in the net.
Purdue Fort Wayne controlled the action the rest of the first half and it finally paid off early in the second. Romain Lopez delivered a hard shot to the left side of the goal for his second goal of the season in the 48th minute. The score was assisted by Frank and Chris Baranowski.
Baranowski also assisted on Purdue Fort Wayne's second goal. This one came in the 62nd minute. Blake Cearns chipped a shot over the keeper's reach.
Cearns rounded out the scoring in the 82nd minute. He worked himself one on one with the keeper and slid a shot just inside the post from the left side. Cearns now has five goals on the year. Baranowski also assisted on the goal.
Freshman keeper Tor Erik Larsen picked up his first career shutout with five saves.
The 'Dons move to 4-3 and hand Northern Kentucky just their second loss of the season. The Norse are now 6-2.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns to action on Saturday in a home match against Bowling Green. It will be a 7 p.m. start time for the 'Dons and Falcons. It will be the second game of a doubleheader with the Purdue Fort Wayne women's team playing Chicago State prior to the men's game.
